Local Resources
Q: Are there police/fire services there?
A: Yes, there are year round special police officers and a volunteer fire department that provides fire protection and emergency medical services, assisted by the Town of Portsmouth.
Q: Are there stores on the island?
A: There is a small store where you can get many grocery items especially canned and dried goods, dairy, bread, eggs, fruit & vegetables and some meats. All carry some general merchandise items and there is the "Anchorage" gift shop where you can buy island momentos, photos and gifts.
Q: How about nightclubs, bars, movies, hotels, and restaurants?
A: No, no, no, no, no. (We like it that way)
Q: Is there a post office?
A: Yes, it is located at the ferry landing at Homestead Dock and is open 6 days a week.
Q: Are there good beaches for swimming?
A: Much of the shore of Prudence is large pebbles/small rock but with easy access to the water. There are several sandy beaches, most noteable at Sandy Beach on the West side, by the T-wharf on the South end, and at Sand Point Light on the East. "The Point" is a favorite spot for swimming with children.
Q: How about bike riding?
A: There are lots of roads to ride on, a few are blacktop but most are gravel and therefore require a little more care when riding on them. NOTE THAT STATE LAW REQUIRES ALL RIDERS UNDER AGE 15 TO WEAR HELMETS.
Q: What else is there to do?
A: The island has miles of roads for walking, biking, or jogging. Nature trails to hike on, birdwatching, looking for deer, and shores for beachcombing. Plenty of places to dig clams, gather mussels and oysters, catch fish or just skip rocks. During the summer months nature programs are offered at the Estuarine Research Center on the South end. There is a small library where books can be checked out. Or you can just spend hours looking upon magnificent sunsets, sunrises and the endless parade of sailboats, tugs, tankers, and lobster boats that ply Narragansett Bay everyday. It works for us.
